"Oracle" at the Free Library of Philadelphia

  • Free Library of Philadelphia, Parkway Central 1901 Vine Street Philadelphia, PA, 19103 United States (map)

Join me and Zachary Mowitz for a workshop series exploring the cello's journey through time and the many ways its history can illuminate our hearing of music, past and present. The series culminates in a recital on June 16, featuring the “Oracle” alongside a new piece by Ira Mowitz and staples from the solo cello repertoire. Participants will discover how this new music connects to the rich legacy of the cello's past, emerging with a deeper experience of music.

In this workshop, the second of three, Zach and I will imagine how we might dance like Bach. We will discuss Bach’s dance suites in detail, how the form evolved through time, and how it influenced both Ira’s new work and “Oracle.”
